In these past few weeks I have been reading with a Year 5 student named Edward Li. He is moderate at reading, he pauses when there are punctuation, and raises his voice when he sees capitalized words. It would be even better if Edward had more emotions in his voice while reading and a lot better if he would ask me the definition of a word when he does not know it.

Last week, Edward has already started the book and I had no clue of what was going on in the book until he started reading a few pages and explained the story to me, but I found this time easier since Edward was starting a new book.

This week, Edward had a better understanding of the context of the book. When I asked him questions, his answer was very concise and was also better than the answers he has answered before.

During this buddy reading session, I think that Edward has improved his skills on understanding the text because when I asked him questions, he was answering to the point. I think it would be better if Edward was more confident and asked me questions when he did not understand, and it would be also better if he answered questions louder. I am already very friendly to Edward, but to boost his confidence, I think I should try harder to be nicer for the next few buddy reading sessions.

Today, Edward was not as talkative as the last sessions, and today he did not pause when he saw commas and fullstops. I have reminded him to pause after full stops but his pauses were often too long, I think he has misunderstood me this time. To help him improve this, perhaps I could tell him to only pause for one second. Edward also does not like to make conversations, he does not ask me questions when he doesn't know what a word meant, Ms Towers has suggested me to ask him to ask me 3 questions every session, and if he does, I could give him smiley faces or stickers. This could be a very good idea to motivate him to talk more and I will use this technique next time.

Today's session with Edward was great, because I noticed that Edward was not as shy as he was before. He would ask me questions of words he did not understand. After buddy reading session has ended, he would also try and make a conversation with Stephanos and I, which was a very great improvement for him because before he would not talk to us at all.

Edward has improved a lot this session, he started using emotions while he read speech lines, and also started pausing after he punctuations. He also answered questions fully and it seemed like he understood the text very well.
